Cherry Blossom Sumie with Bushido in GyoushoCalling all Artists! Are you looking for an alternative to displaying your prints? Try putting it in a scroll format. This alternative framing method will allow your art to stand out and the print can be complemented by the frames color and design. This particularly works well on giclee prints that can be rolled up and subjected to a small amount of water during the Urauchi Process. We look forward to receiving your questions. This is not just for calligraphy.

At the right is a Shikishi Kakejiku with the character Love in Gyousho style. This is a beige cloth with Geisha print in a wood block style cloth. Prices for Shikishi Kakejiku start at $30.00.

Aikido Scroll in Sandan Hyougu Style with Ash Wood JikusakiThe art of hyousou was brought to Japan during the Nara Jidai or period when an influx of artisans from China and Korea came to Japan and intruduced both buddhism and the art of paper and glue to Japan. Some terms you will hear in Japanese interchangeably for a wall scroll are KAKEJIKU, HYOUGU, and KAKEMONO. Kakemono can be referred to any artwork that hangs. The most appropriate terms to use are KAKEJIKU and HYOUGU. Order and customize your scroll directly from our shopping cart.
Hassou - This is the smaller half-moon shaped rod holding the rod cloth in place.

Ten - This is the top portion of the scroll that has cloth. Ten stands for "heaven".

Chi - The chi is the bottom portion of the scroll that has cloth.  Chi is translated as "earth". Note that there is typically a difference in size between the chi and the ten. This is due to the fact that typically, when hung a scroll is looked and meditated upon in a sitting or kneeling position and having a longer portion at the top balances this for the viewer naturally.

Hashira - These are the cloth areas on the Right and Left side that contain the cloth. Hashira stands for "pillar".

Ichimonji - This typically consists of golden cloth called "Kinran" that borders the top and the bottom of the paper and the Ten & Chi.

Nori & Noribake or Hake
- These are the glue and the brushes used to back or reinforce the "kireji"  or different parts of the scroll. This is done to both the hanshi or washi paper as well as the cloth.

Jikusaki - The jikusaki are the end points on the Wood Jikusaki End Capbottom staff of the scroll. They come in a variety of styles and colors. All quotes include the free cream colored plastic jikusaki. Choose from a variety of black, wooden and golden colored Jikusaki.
